October is American Pharmacists Month, and we are highlighting Ole Miss pharmacy alums daily to celebrate all the fantastic work pharmacists do! Pharmacists are crucial members of the healthcare field and use their medical expertise in various career paths.Hi everyone! I am Eric Pham, an alumnus of the School of Pharmacy class of 2023. I am a PGY1 Pharmacy Resident at Duke University Hospital. Why would you encourage a student to pursue pharmacy? With a PharmD foundation, there are so many facets of pharmacy practice that you can pursue. Seek opportunities to be exposed to different areas of pharmacy you are unfamiliar with and shadow them or ask to participate in projects actively. What do you love about being a pharmacist? I love being able to care for a high acuity of patients and work alongside collaborative healthcare team members. We are trusted to manage patients' medications and educate our teams and patients on the safe and optimal use of medications. What do you love about the Ole Miss School of Pharmacy?I could not have done it without my faculty and staff mentors who mentored and encouraged me from my undergraduate through professional school, pharmacy organization events, or APPE clinical rotations.#PharmacistMonth #ForPharmacy

5 Lessons Student Pharmacists Learn LATEโผ๏ธ1๏ธโฃ Build a relationship with faculty The faculty at your school have a well established network. They can be a great resource and guide in teaching you how to build and your own network. 2๏ธโฃ Leveraging Social Media Use your platform to showcase your journey as a student. Social Media can be a powerful tool in helping you find mentors, communities, and like minded people. It is grossly underutilized as a tool to building a strong professional network 3๏ธโฃThe PharmD can be MORE Donโt only look at community, industry, or health system as the only paths. There are plenty of opportunities out there and areas you can venture out into with your PharmD and excel 4๏ธโฃYour creativity and the PharmD can coexist Donโt dull your creativity because of some idea you have been presented with about what a pharmacist is. There are plenty of examples of pharmacists leaning into their creativity to design programs that improve patient outcome. Exhibit Aโก๏ธ๐๐พโ๏ธ5๏ธโฃ Getting an A on a rotation does not guarantee a stellar Letter of Recommendation ๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ฉ I know, this sounds crazy right? But it is absolutely true. Your references are asked to speak to more than just your academic performance or aptitude. If your preceptor doesnโt know you well, or worst, thought you were a โknow it allโ or unprofessional and lacked tact. You can see how things can go left very quickly. Do your best to build genuine relationships with preceptors. This will go a long wayโผ๏ธIn working with students, I have found these to be the most common challengesWhat did I miss? What has been your experience with what you wish students learned early? Please share and help enlighten a next generation โคต๏ธ๐ค Thanks, -Saley ๐ค๐๐พโ๏ธ

October is American Pharmacists Month, and we are highlighting Ole Miss pharmacy alums daily to celebrate all the fantastic work pharmacists do! Pharmacists are crucial leaders in healthcare and use their medical expertise in various career paths.Hi everyone! I am Candace Vasilyev, an alumnus of the School of Pharmacy class of 2003. I am a Pharmacist at Chaneyโs Pharmacy in Oxford, MS.Why would you encourage a student to pursue pharmacy? I encourage students to pursue a career in pharmacy because it is a satisfying and rewarding career that allows you the ability to help many patients with numerous healthcare needs. A positive aspect of having a career in pharmacy is that it allows you to work in a wide array of settings and positions that are hard to offer in other professions. What do you love about being a pharmacist? I love working directly with patients in a community setting and developing a relationship with them by gaining their trust. It is rewarding to help patients improve and maintain their health by always being readily available to them. I also enjoy the opportunity to go out into the community and immunize the public in different settings. What do you love about the Ole Miss School of Pharmacy? What I love about the Ole Miss School of Pharmacy is the faculty and lifelong relationships that are built. The faculty are advocates for the students and willing to give resources to help answer questions. I also love the long-lasting relationships that are built from the program. This program allows students to connect with many pharmacists who could one day be potential employers or coworkers. #PharmacistMonth #ForPharmacy
